It’s not right to eat whatever we feel like at any time of the day. Certain foods can be harmful if taken on empty stomach and you need to give your digestive system some time after waking up before stuffing it up with certain things. Here are five things you shouldn’t break a fast with, and some suggestions of healthier alternatives at the end.
- Citrus Fruits.
Citrus fruits include the very common oranges, lemon, lime, grapefruits and others. These are very healthy fruits to eat, but proper timing is very important when you’re dealing with these fruits. Filling up your empty stomach with them may increases your stomach acidity and can worsen conditions such as gastric ulcers and predispose one to this condition. Best to eat them after you’ve had a proper breakfast or lunch, depending how many hours you’ve stayed since your last meal.
2. Raw Vegetables.
Vegies are very healthy things to eat, and they have lots of health benefits, but eating lots of them raw first thing in the morning isn’t the best thing you can do for your stomach. They are naturally packed with coarse fibres and can put stress on your empty and waking stomach if you eat lots of them first thing in the morning and may cause stomach cramps and pain.
3. Chillies and spicy foods.
Eating chillies and spices on an empty stomach can be very harmful to the stomach.
They irritate the stomach lining which leads to acid secretion and cramps. They can worsen existing gastric ulcers by irritating the ulcers.
4. Chocolate and Sugary Foods.
Starting your day with Chocolates and Sugary food is not a healthy habit. The processed sugars increase stress on a still waking pancreas, the body metabolism has properly started and forcing the pancreas to start secreting the adequate amount of insulin needed to metabolise the sugars at that point, you end up increasing your blood sugar when you’re still yet to get into your days work. Best take them in the middle of the day when your body metabolism is already fully activated and energy from these sugars can be easily utilized.
5. Carbonated Drinks.
Carbonated drinks are generally bad for your health, taking them on empty stomach is even worse, the carbonated acids in the increases stomach acidity and gas and may lead to cramps in some people. They’re also packed with lots of refined sugars which should be avoided, especially in the early hours when you’re yet to have proper breakfast and start your day.
What can I eat on empty stomach….
There’s a lot of things you can eat that are healthy on empty stomach, for example low carb eggs muffins, oats and granola, greek yogurt, boiled eggs, apple sandwiches, dry fruits like almonds, dates and walnuts, omelets and most importantly a glass of water before anything else goes into your stomach.
